Latin Poetry (Latin IV) is the final year for the overall Latin curriculum at EPCHS. We will focus on poetry through Catullus and Ovid first semester, and Vergil’s Aeneid second semester. There will be a field trip to U of I in the spring (possibly fall instead).
GRADING:
You will be graded on assignments done in class, quizzes, tests, projects, and participation. Each of these areas are graded by total number of points rather than a weighted percentage. The difficulty and frequency of each determines the number of points it is worth.
In-class assignments are graded on the basis of accuracy or completion; the determination of which will be up to my own discretion.
Quizzes will cover grammar, vocabulary, and/or other topics as needed. Half points are awarded when general understanding is present despite errors. You may retake ONE quiz per quarter for full credit.
Tests occur either at the culmination of a unit or at the end of a series of units. Tests, unlike quizzes, will cover multiple types of questions and content. Once tests are graded and returned, you may make corrections for ¼ or ½ points back toward your test grade. You must attempt to correct all mistakes to receive these points.
Projects will be assigned generally on a quarterly basis. The projects will be collaborative in nature but working alone may be permitted at times. Creativity and hard work are always rewarded!
Participation means following along during lessons, paying attention, taking notes, and actively learning. I understand that not everyone is eager to volunteer answers in class, but I do expect that you are able to respond if called upon or demonstrate that you are trying to understand.
You receive 2 points per day as participation. 1 point is for being on task and actively engaging in class. The other point is for coming to class prepared; if you show up to class without a notebook/paper, a pencil, or your Chromebook, you will not receive that point.
Extra Credit is a privilege, NOT a right!
LATE WORK
Late work is accepted in accordance with the school’s policy as outlined in the handbook. However, I do deduct 10% off the assignment for each day it is late if not due to an excused absence. I will not accept an assignment after it is 3 days late.
