It's the very last film of the year, can you believe!! And I bet you didn't see this one coming, did you now? But let's be honest, who has seen Brave and didn't love it? Here's your answer, no one!
Our May film, Brave, is an Oscar winner, believe it or not. It won Best Animated Feature in 2013 and even if it was released 13 years ago, it's an instant classic.
Set in Scotland in a rugged and mythical time, this movie features princess Merida, an aspiring archer and impetuous daughter of Queen Elinor. Merida makes a reckless choice that unleashes unintended peril and forces her to spring into action to put things right again. And the reason? She didn't want to get married! Sounds familiar? I thought so. I'm not going to reveal anything else about the plot though, because I really want you to watch this one!
Brave is groundbreaking in the sense that it gave the whole "princess" concept a revamp. Merida is not your usual princess. She's not in the slightest interested in love, she only wants to be an archer and live free of the path her mother has in store for her. It is a visual feast, both characterwise and landscapewise. Merida alone is such a distinctive character, what with her flaming red, curly hair and simple but beautiful dresses. Scotland is obviously a perfect setting for any movie, but combine it with Pixar and you get stunning views.
Finally, we can't ignore the fact that Disney at long last decided to feature the relationship between mother and daughter. Up until now, it was always the fathers who got all the spotlight, so it's a more than welcome change of perspective. And a necessary one, seeing as there are so many girls and mothers out there who will identify with Merida and Elinor.
If famous faces, well...voices in this case is what you're after, you won't be disappointed! Notable members of the cast are Dame Emma Thompson as Elinor, Julie Walters as The Witch, Robbie Coltrane (our forever Hagrid) as Lord Dingwall among others.
So, run, don't walk to the library and enjoy Brave while you can. Excellent to practise a little bit of Scottish accent, the world's most beloved English accent incidentally and for good reason!
