The Grand Budapest Hotel -Wes Anderson

November has brought along its good friends cold and wind, so it´s high time we added some grandeur to our hunched lives!

Wes Anderson is well known for his unique and quirky directorial style. It´s not uncommon to encounter a number of familiar faces in his films and The Grand Budapest Hotel is no exception. Ralph Fiennes, Adrien Brody, Willem Dafoe, Tilda Swinton and Léa Seydoux to name but a few.

This film recounts the adventures of M. Gustave (Ralph Fiennes), a legendary concierge at a famous European hotel between the wars, alongside Zero Moustafa (Tony Revolori), the lobby boy who becomes his most trusted friend. The story involves the theft and recovery of a priceless Renaissance painting and the battle for an enormous family fortune. To cut a long story short, it´s like watching a story written by Agatha Christie and directed by Samuel Beckett, since "absurd" would be a perfect word to describe many of the scenes.

Having said that, the film is really a joy to look at thanks to its impeccable production design and cinematography. One should pay special attention to the stunning pastel colours of some scenes, as well as the beautifully made costumes. Mind you it won Oscars in both Costume Design and Production Design along with Makeup and Hairstyling and Music/Original Score by Alexandre Desplat.

All in all, even if you´re not a big fan of Wes Anderson´s style you should give this film a shot! After all, who would not want to see Lord Voldemort with a nose and elegant suits?? (Yes, Ralph Fiennes IS Lord Voldemort!)

P.s. Wes Anderson´s new film "The French Dispatch" is now playing in theatres and it has already scooped some award nominations and a 9-minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival!
