Joker: Folie à Deux is the highly anticipated sequel to Joker (2019) by director Todd Phillips. If you know a little bit of French and a little bit of psychiatry, you probably know that "Folie à Deux" literally means "madness of two" and it is a term used in phychiatry to refer to a syndrome called "share delusional disorder".
That being said, you know what to expect from the film: a great deal of madness! Joaquin Phoenix returs as the titular character, this time joined by none other than Lady Gaga in the role of Harley Quinn, Joker's love interest. And when Lady Gaga is involved you know exactly what else to expect: music of course!
Although Joaquin Phoenix delivers a riveting performance as Arthur Fleck, the real star of the film is undoubtedly Lady Gaga, who shines as Harley Quinn and adds intensity to her role. The transition into a musical has been a surprising, yet intriguing element that makes the film feel unconventional. Phoenix and Gaga have a chemistry that has been described as both haunting and oddly sweet, transforming their violent onscreen relationship into a melancholic musical love story.
Director Todd Phillips takes the oppportunity to weave in a variety of genres, from courtroom drama to dark comedy, giving Folie à Deux an ambitious cinematic flair. Fans of the film and the DC universe who appreciate a bold, artistic vision are likely to find the sequel a fascinating continuation of Arthur Fleck's story.
If you thought the first Joker was a little too dark for you, then you might as well pass, but at the end of the day October is the month of Halloween and you could embrace the darkness and spooky atmosphere of the season by giving this film a chance.
