Little Women - Greta Gerwig

So....December! It was about time we had a woman director, don´t you think?

Greta Gerwig has been responsible for some very popular films in the last few years, including Lady Bird and Little Women. For the latter she has also written the screenplay, for which she was nominated for an Oscar. However, the Academy refused to nominate her for Best Director curiously enough, as it was widely believed she would be included in that category making her one of the first women to have received that honour.

The story is entirely and quite faithfully based on Louisa May Alcott´s novel, which is also a rough reflection of the writer´s own life. The story is about four sisters, Jo March (Saoirse Ronan), Amy March (Florence Pugh), Meg March (Emma Watson) and Beth March (Eliza Scanlen). In the years after the American Civil War, Jo lives in New York and makes her living as a writer, while Amy studies painting in Paris. Meg is married to a teacher and the youngest sister, Beth, is probably the one that you will feel sorry for, but....no spoilers!

The cast is a beautiful combination of veterans like Laura Dern and Meryl Streep and talented young actors, such as Timothee Chalamet and Florence Pugh, who got herself an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Even though I love Emma Watson, I have to admit that her British accent prevails so much that at times it´s difficult to believe she is American, but that´s just a detail.

The costumes are exquisite and the only Oscar the film won was precisely for Costume Design. If you like period films this one is a must, it will feel nostalgic and heart-warming. You should also pay attention to the change of colour between past and present, as the film uses the flashback technique a lot. All performances are extraordinary, but Ronan and Pugh deliver a masterclass of what acting should be really, so kudos to these two ladies.

All in all a film worth watching, December is the perfect month to stay at home, grab your blanket and get cosy watching something with the wole family or just on your own!
