Day Five: Planning
Objective: Students will independently draft fables.
Ask each student to use Fable Plans 1 & 2 to write the first draft of his/her fable.
Communicate criteria for the fable:
- The fable must begin with a simple introduction that establishes the situation and introduces the characters. (CCSS W.3.3a, W.4.3a, W.5.3a)
- Dialogue must be used to develop experiences and events or show the response of characters to situations. (CCSS W.3.3b, W.4.3b, W.5.3b)
- Transitional and/or sequence terms must be used to manage the sequence of events. (CCSS W.3.3c, W.4.3c, W.5.4c)
- Concrete words (such as specific nouns and active verbs) must be used to convey experiences and events precisely. (CCSS W.4.3d, W.5.3d)
- A conclusion must wrap up the events, as well as imply or state a lesson. (CCSS W.3.3e, W.4.3e, W.5.3e)
Day Six: Editing
Objective: Students will independently edit fables.
Use Editing My Fable for independent and/or peer editing.
- Criteria for Mechanics
- Paragraphs are indented.
- Sentence beginnings and proper nouns are capitalized.
- Dialogue is properly punctuated.
- Each sentence uses correct punctuation.
- Commas, apostrophes, and other punctuation marks are used properly.
- Spelling is correct.
Criteria for Technique
- Introduction presents characters, setting, and situation.
- Dialogue is used to develop experiences and events or show characters’ reactions.
- Transitional words or phrases help the reader understand sequence of events.
- Specific nouns and active verbs give the reader a clear picture of what’s happening.
- The conclusion wraps up the story and provides a lesson (either stated or implied).
Criteria for Clarity
- The fable is clear, well sequenced, and easy to understand.
Day Seven: Finalizing
Objective: Students will independently finalize fables.
Have each student write or type a final draft of his/her fable (and illustrate, if desired). Share and display.
