Objective: Students will be able to plan fables with appropriate morals and animal characters.
Step One: Explore traits associated with various animals.
Discuss the animals that Aesop chose for “The Ants and the Grasshopper” and “The Fox and the Crow.” Why did he choose each of these animals for the special role each played in the fable?
What traits are associated with animals? Complete Animals and Their Traits independently, in small groups, or as a whole class to explore traits associated with specific animals.
Step Two: Discuss a variety of proverbs.
Many times lessons taught through fables have been around for years. Read and/or display the list of proverbs. Students may choose one of these lessons or one of their own.
Step Three: Complete Fable Plan 1.
Each student will choose a lesson, or moral for his/her fable. The moral may be one of the proverbs presented or something different.
The student briefly establishes the plot by writing the event that will teach the chosen moral.
The student thinks about the character traits necessary for the story. Then he/she determines which animals would best portray those traits.
