The recommended book for you this week is the brilliant children's book classic Watership Down by Richard Adams.
Fiver is a small rabbit with a sixth sense and one day he foresees a disaster for his warren (the home of the rabbits). The other rabbits thinks he's crazy, but his brother Hazel and a few others believe him and they set out on an eventful journey to find a safe home. When they finally come to Watership Down, the place they first believe to be their perfect home, they realize that their dangerous adventure are only just beginning and the greatest threat is yet to come...
Adams begin his beloved story as a way to entertain his two daughters on a car ride. This continued on their ride to school every morning until one day Adams decided to put the story down on paper. It was his first book and he was actually over 50 when he wrote it! After several rejections from different publishers somebody finally took a chance on putting it out and the rest is history. The book went on to sell over 50 million copies and win several awards and is today a well-known classic in children's literature. It has also been made into a famous film and TV series.
The tip of this week is to check out amazing and bestselling young adult writer John Green. Green has written books such as Looking for Alaska, An Abundance of Katherines, Paper Towns, Will Grayson, Will Grayson, The Fault in Our Stars and the brand new Turtles All the Way Down. This week we have a wolf theme! Both series have been incredibly popular at the library over the past few years so lets take a better look at them.
The Syster Varg series (Syster Varg, Yla i Natten and Vargar, Vargar, Vargar) by Anette Skåhlberg is about twin sisters Sandra and Tea. It starts off with the police finding Tea, who has been missing for six years, in the woods where she's been raised by wolves. She can't speak or act like a human and all she wants is to return to her wolf family, with the help of her sister...
The Syster Varg series has gotten raving reviews by critics and has been widely read by children in Sweden.
The Vargbröder series (Wolf Brother in English, the language it's originally written in) by Michelle Paver takes place during the Stone Age where hunter-gatherer clans live in the forest. Our main character, a twelve-year-old boy called Torak, belongs to the Wolf Clan. The story begins with his father getting killed by a bear which has been possessed by a demon and right before he dies he tells Torak to swear an oath to find the Mountain of the World Spirit and ask the Spirit to help destroy the bear before it kills all life in the forest. Torak's guide on his journey is a wolf cub who adopts Torak into his wolf pack.
The Wolf Brother series has been highly popular around the world and has been translated into several languages.
The library's first book tip is the very popular comic book series Scott Pilgrim by Bryan Lee O'Malley.
Scott Pilgrim is a bit of a slacker and a bass-player in a band. One night he falls for the very cool Ramona Flowers, but he soon realizes that getting a date with her was the least of his worries when it turns out that he has to battle and defeat her seven evil exes in order to be with her...
This book series has been incredibly popular with readers of all ages since the library opened over 3 years ago. Often a whole group of friends discover the series together and come to the library during their breaks, sitting with a book each reading together and talking about the story.
Reading comics is a great way to both get into reading and practice your English and Scott Pilgrim is great fun which I'd recommend for everyone!
