Music
Music exists in all cultures and touches people physically, mentally and emotionally. As a form of aesthetic expression, music is used in a variety of contexts, has different functions and means different things to each of us. It is also an important part of people's social community and plays a role in the development of an individual's identity. In our time, music from different cultures and time periods is combined with other art forms in new expressions.
Proficiency in and knowledge of music increases opportunities to participate in the cultural life of society.
But here's what most people don't know:Â Every song on your phone, every beat that makes you move, every melody that gets stuck in your head - it all traces back to the same musical DNA. This term, we're going to discover that DNA and learn how to use it.
The purpose of the unit is:Â
Discover: The origin and evolution of blues, gospel, jazz, and hip-hop - and understand how they connect to today's music.
Experience: What it's like to work as a professional music ensemble - the collaboration, creativity, and problem-solving that happens when musicians work together.
Create: Your own musical expressions using traditional instruments, voices, and modern digital tools.
Connect: How these musical styles shaped society, culture, and continue to influence the music industry today.
By the end of this unit, you'll be able to demonstrate your understanding through various ways:
Musical Understanding:
Identify characteristics and elements of blues, gospel, jazz, and hip-hop
Understand how musical styles evolve and influence each other
Apply music theory concepts in practical, creative ways
Collaboration Skills:
Contribute meaningfully to ensemble performances (in whatever role fits you best)
Communicate musical ideas using proper terminology
Support and build on others' creative contributions
Creative Expression:
Express yourself through voice, instruments, or digital tools
Adapt traditional songs and styles for modern contexts

Connect musical styles to their historical and social contexts
Understand how music serves different communities and purposes
