Nearly twenty years after the first Harry Potter book was published, it's popularity is still very much alive today and particularly loved by our students at IESL. After the success of last year's Harry Potter Book Night we decided to do it all again. Through competitions, quizzes, games, activities and exhibitions our school was transformed to the famous wizarding places of Hogwarts, Diagon Alley and Platform Nine and Three Quarters. The dining hall became Hogwarts' Great Hall, the year six corridor - Diagon Alley, the aula - Platform Nine and Three Quarters and the library - a snapshot of the classrooms at Hogwarts; Potions, Defence Against the Dark Arts, Herbology and Transfiguration.
This year's theme was 'Professors at Hogwarts'. Year six, who are currently reading Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, visited the library during their lessons. Activities included Professor McGonagall's Transfiguration lesson and creating their own Hogwarts professor.
The finale of the week was on Thursday where 80 students entered Platform Nine and Three Quarters to watch Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets on the big screen. The end of the film was met with rapturous applause from the pupils. Harry Potter is still as fascinating, enchanting and loved as ever!
We celebrated Roald Dahl's 100th birthday on Tuesday 14th September. He is one of the greatest children's writers of all time, bringing us Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, the BFG, the Witches and many more fascinating stories. His books are filled with wit, humour and eccentricity, yet contain poignant, moving messages. Our Roald Dahl theme contained competitions, games and activities, including the golden ticket challenge and invent your own chocolate bar. We also read and listened to the books and watched sections of the films.
A total of six prizes were won by students in Years 4, 5 and 7. Well done to all who entered!
Here is a little retrospective look on last year's library projects...
