Overview of Status of Analysis, Design, Fabrication, Tests, etc.
Begin prototyping gross and fine positioning mechanisms. Testing bolt torque and prototype of L frame and rail for proof of concept presentation.
Accomplishments from Previous Week
Purchased material and threaded inserts for L frame and rail- polycarbonate and LDPE
Cut prototypes of rail
Machined prototype of L frame
3D printed probe copies to use while we don't have access to the real ones
Goals for Next Week (list names after each item). Use specific and measurable objectives.
prototype rest of head frame- Kaj, Jessica
Create attachments for fine positioning tip-tilt platform- Percy, Carter
Modify design of rails and L frame to fit rest of headframe- Claire, Jessica
Sponsor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
Met with sponsor Friday 1/31. He is looking at purchasing different probes for his own use, so we might have to modify our mounting method depending on the probe he buys. He likes the positioning design so far and emphasized the need for precision.
Instructor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
Met last Thursday 1/30- Dr. T suggested using threaded inserts to screw directly into our plastic, and I purchased some to test this week. Dr. T had previously expressed concern about the weight of the fine positioning mechanism and we are hoping to address that in our proof of concept presentation.
Comments from Other Students in the Class (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
None since last week. We are presenting tomorrow and will take student's comments from last presentation into account, such as having a full drawing of our concept and how the components fit together.
Risks and Areas of Concern
Material for L frame is relatively thick (3/8") in order to fit 1/4-20 screws. We are machining it down to make it more flexible overall, otherwise we won't be able to screw into it and will have to reevaluate our design.
Resources or Information Required but not Available
Had issues with lasercutting polycarbonate- I had an MAE 3 tutor help me but the lasercam burnt the material. We'll consult with Chris when he gets back tomorrow.
