Accomplishments from Previous Week
Created basic MATLAB script to model the three lens design.
Script will output the focal lengths of the three lenses, the distances of the image and the object, the total magnification, and the total length of the system.
Refined problem definition
Light source problem: currently, the system has very, very low power intensity which will potentially lead to a dark, unclear image
Zemax:
Downloaded trial, currently exploring the capabilities of the software
Further lens design and optics literature review
Burning through relevant chapters/sections in "Lens Design: A Practical Guide" by Haiyin Sun.
Sketched a design for the optical test setup for confirming simulation results
Found out that Talke's lab already has some optical components which can be used for experimentally implementing our lens system.

Risks and Areas of Concern
The current optics system design, which is modeled after a microscope, relies on a projected virtual image as the final product. However, this projected virtual image involves diverging rays which may potentially not be captured by the smartphone camera. Hence, given that the permissible light source is already very, very low (4uw), having this light source diverge as it passes through the lens system is concerning and will possibly lead to a very dark image.

Does any professor have this lying in their bookshelf? There are not too many "friendly" and comprehensive tutorials on using Zemax online. This book is widely recommended by Zemax users.
