Project Objectives
High Priority Objectives
Reduce the noise level output of the turbine (preferably 10 dB or more)
Make the noise suppression system rugged and low maintenance
Second Priority Objectives
Minimize weight
Ascertain various sources of noise generation
Other Constraints and Issues
Be sure it fits with the given geometry (~18" length)
Make sure it can withstand a maximum loading of 5.25G
Small increase in back pressure allowable (2-5%)
Keep temperature greater than 850 F at all points in exhaust
Keep direction of expulsion within 45 degrees
note:
Length can be maximum of 24"
Diameter maximum 4.75"
WOW Design Solution
Noise reduced enough to hold a conversation (Dishwasher quiet)
Risk Reduction Strategy
Have all safety precautions listed and read before firing up the turbine (read through manual)
Accomplished - Must adhere to safety checklist before operating the turbine!
Fabricate blast shield and wall dividers for the turbine test rig
Accomplished - Fuel container is separate from electronics which are both separate from the turbine. The turbine must be properly attached to the test rig before operation.
Obtain noise data - Obtain data at every 10 degrees from the turbine at a 10 foot radius
Fabricate flow by-pass system to minimize shearing instabilities due to steep velocity gradient between ambient air and bulk flow
Fabricate chevrons to promote mixing at outlet thereby minimizing the number of coherent turbulent eddies generating aeroacoustic noise
Intermediate Milestones
Get turbine running (week 5)
Noise mapping (week 6-7)
Obtain Pressure sensors (Order by Week 7)
Fabricate/test suppression system (week 8)
