Tutoring is available after-school for students who may want extra help in achieving their academic goals. In addition to after-school support, students have the opportunity to attend Saturday Academy to prepare for the Regents exams. We also are able to provide more support in class with student teachers and CUNY Tutor Corps members in mathematics and computer science classes. We offer after-school and before-school intervention groups and even lunchtime tutoring for students who are struggling with the demands of our challenging academic program.
We offer a range of college and career-readiness support through small group mentoring, guest speakers, and College and Career Foundations classes. Our partners at LaGuardia Community College, Con Edison, and National Grid give their time to provide feedback to teachers and mentor small groups of students on a monthly basis about the expectations of life after high school. We feel confident that students who leave our program will be well positioned to secure a range of careers or admissions in competitive four-year colleges.
Students meet in small groups bi-weekly with designated staff and teachers to review their grades and transcripts, discuss the college application process, learn about career and internship opportunities, engage in community building activities, and discuss a variety of topics of interest to students. We believe this continues to foster a strong relationship with students and staff.
Some topics have included: digital citizenship, organizational skills, current events, bullying prevention, self-advocacy skills, and career exploration.
At Energy Tech, we have 2 full-time social workers, 1 social work intern, and 2 guidance counselors. We are additionally supported through an on-site mental health clinic, Western Queens Consultation. Designated teachers and staff also support with advisement - particularly related to college and career programs and application processes.
