4.4 It has been an amazing year! We have learnt a lot, smiled a lot, laughed a lot and enjoyed ourselves A LOT! You have all been superstars this year and have proven to yourself and everybody else just how amazing you are. I hope you continue smiling and enjoying yourselves in Year 5.Â
We started to understand the meaning of place value by using base 10 blocks to create a number. We had to select a number and choose the correct amount of blocks for each column. Our partners would help to check and give us advice on our number we had created.
We became real life clocks! We created a clock using paper posters and then we worked as a team to set ourselves at the correct time. Mr Lewis told one person in our team a time and then we had to race against the clock to create the correct time. Our hands were the minute hands and our legs were the hour hands.
We were using the base 10 blocks to show what adding 1s,10s and 100s looks like. We created a number and then had to create it using base 10 blocks. We then chose our first number e.g. 5. We would then need to add 5 ones to our number. We then created our first number again but this time we had to add 5 tens. We created our first number again and finally added 5 hundreds. We wrote the answers for each of the different addition questions.
We measure the area and perimeter of different areas. We used the football field as our place to measure. We started by finding the perimeter. We measure the football field in 'footsteps' and walked around the edge of different areas. The areas we had to find the perimeter of were; the whole pitch, half of the pitch and the penalty box. When we found the perimeter of each area by measuring the length and width we could then use this to calculate the area of each space.

We watched a short video clip of a cartoon character visiting the dentist. This turned out to be an evil dentist who was taking children's teeth and selling them, until he was caught! We looked at the different characters in the short story and started to identify different characteristics about them. We looked at their intrinsic and extrinsic features and used powerful adjectives to describe them.
We created drama pieces to help convince people that littering was harming the planet. We created a script and turned it into a drama piece. We had to show people that littering was bad for the environment and actually used some of our performances in our class assembly! It was amazing to see such amazing actors in the classroom!
The teachers in Year 4 all wrote biographies about themselves. We looked at their biographies and started to identify the key features of a biography. We looked at the different subheadings they had used and started to create ideas for what we could include in our biographies. We then spent time practising the skills needed to write a biography before eventually writing our own.
We received a letter from Mr Lewis the principal, explaining that he wanted us to create a new meal for the cafeteria. We had to create a new healthy meal and then tried to persuade Mr Lewis to add it to the cafeteria by writing him a persuasive letter. We learnt lots of features that are important in persuasive letters such as powerful adjectives, similes and rhetorical questions. Mr Lewis came to listen to our letters and thought they were amazing. We also had a visit from the manager of the cafeteria who took some of our letters away to come up with new ideas for the menu!
Field Trips
We visited the Shiekh Faisal museum and received a detailed tour explaining all of the different belongings that Sheikh Faisal had collected and stored in the museum. It was amazing to see all different kinds of belongings and learn the history of each item. We especially enjoyed seeing lots of classic cars and we were even given a brief tour of an exclusive part of the museum that had not yet opened.
STEM Xplorers came into school and completed lots of fun hands-on Science expirments. It was amazing to see expirments of Science topics that we had focused on. We were even lucky enough to learn how to make our own slime and were able to take it home!
We visited Quest and had an amazing time riding rollercoasters and spending quality time with our friends. We ate our lunch at Quest before returning back to school. It was so much fun!
