Things to keep in mind
Best practice with Meet
Google Calendar Meet Link
This "Meet" can be accessible at any time by all members of EMSB who have the link. The link to that meeting will never expire and therefore can be used by anyone who has it, at any time.
Google Classroom Meet Link (RECOMMENDED)
This "Meet" can be accessible ONLY once the teacher has signed into it.
Teachers should ensure they are the last to leave so that students don't end up meeting on their own. (Think of it as your physical classroom, you unlock to let the students in and lock after they have all left.) You can manually remove students from the meeting, if needed to close the Meet link.
Make sure to turn off quick access, when in session, so only the students in your class can access the Meet and not just any users within EMSB.
When leaving the meeting, make sure to use the "End Call" feature that will end the call for everyone and prevent having anyone lingering behind.
Other teachers in your Classroom will also be set as co-host in the Meet (you may need to reset the Classroom Meet Link for them to be co-host.).
Meet created with a nickname
Create a Meet with a nickname from https://meet.google.com/ while signed in with your EMSB account. Share that nickname with your students.
Meets created with a nickname cannot be joined by students, unless the teacher is present first. (nickname: name you will give to your Meet instead of a link Ex.: MrsSmithMath233)
If you want to provide "breakout" rooms for students to meet in smaller teams, we suggest you create nicknames for those rooms, and that you have them open in different tabs on your browser. This gives you the opportunity to monitor students from time to time, as you would with group work in the classroom, but will also have the sound of all the rooms at once. In order to mute specific tabs, you can add the Mute Tab Chrome extension to your browser. This extension will allow you to mute/unmute specific tabs.
When leaving the meeting, make sure you "End call" for all participants so no one is left lingering behind.
Meetings can only be created by teachers.
