Week 3

This week we will look more at questioning what we take for granted on social media feeds. Where do the different posts come from? What are our own biases when we decide to share things? Are we accidentally sharing misinformation or even fake news without even realizing it? What about the other people in our circles?

How can we be more vigilant and help our families to do the same?

We are all biased in some way. Biases are not always a bad thing. Although a bias can be linked to prejudice or discrimination, it can also refer to a strong interest in or a preference for one given thing. Ex.: You may be biased towards trying a new restaurant over another as it offers your favourite type of cuisine.

When we are aware of our own biases, we can more easily pause and reflect when faced with new information. It will help us and our children in return to be more critical of what is found online (and offline) and lead to better, more informed decision making.
