Kids LOVED having their own library cards on a lanyard to keep. This 10-book prize was such a hit.
In our school, elementary teachers collect and keep library cards. For students to have their own copy fostered independence and self-reliance in a way we did not anticipate.
Small prizes are time-consuming. While it was exciting to have a new sticker after every 10 books, we were often swamped and behind on distribution.
It wasn't a nightmare, but it was a friendly nightmare.
Next year, we plan to communicate that prizes will be distributed when students are scheduled for library electives.
There is power in creating something unique and special that kids know they can't get anywhere else.
The energy that we created around this silly story is something our students will remember. Don't be afraid to use storytelling in your program. It's a powerful way to connect, and you're probably better at it than you think.
The goal of our 40-Book Challenge was for students to self-identify as readers and feel happy in the library.
It was not to verify that students read each page or retained content.
Know your purpose and stick to it. Did some kids wear lanyards and sport stickers they didn't earn? Maybe. Okay, definitely.
Did they wear them with pride? Yes.
That conditioning matters and creates fertile soil for future learning. We feel successful.
