Speech@Emerson is an online graduate program for speech-language pathology graduate students. The same curriculum and professors are used as our residential program, Emerson College, in Boston, MA. Students enrolled in the online modality, Speech@Emerson, typically take their live coursework during the evening hours and participate in four community placements across their graduate career within proximity to where they live.
Emerson’s mission is to provide students with diverse experiences across all four clinical placements. ASHA requires that students gain experiences across the lifespan (pediatrics through adults). Clinical placements are selected to ensure that students have experience with a variety of:
● Ages
● Clinical settings
● Supervisors
● Patient/Client severity levels (mild-severe)
● Patient/Client disorders
● Evaluation and treatment
● Cultural/linguistic diversity
● Interprofessional practice (i.e., collaborating with OTs, PTs, school psych, nurses, teachers, etc.)
At S@E, students take courses concurrently with clinical placements. Our program is meant to develop well-rounded practitioners, so academic courses follow the developmental trajectory. We do our best to place students in clinical settings that align with their Plan of Study.
We offer two curriculum tracks at Speech@Emerson. Students can choose to complete the program in five terms or nine terms. Below are our plans of study based on track and graduation date.
The Emerson Placement Team is made up of a group of Emerson Directors and also Placement Specialists. The Placement Team searches and secures all clinical placement sites for students throughout the program. Placement Specialists conduct initial outreach to sites to inquire about interest and availability to host Speech@Emerson students. Directors speak directly to supervisors to review programmatic policies, conduct site visits, and manage any questions or concerns once the placement begins.
