We hope to make the academic experience for students as fulfilling as possible and foster an environment that encourages kindness and support. Academics can be challenging and rewarding for many reasons, and we believe that good grades are not all that's important - your health and building the confidence and resilience to try again are just as critical to your success here at William & Mary.
Previous and Current Work:
Writing legislation to call for WM to bring back ASL courses, and funding and setting up an intro to ASL workshop to raise awareness
Direct meetings with Provost Peggy Agouris to advocate for increased course offerings in fields where students were struggling to get into classes to ensure students can meet their major requirements in a timely manner
Direct meetings with the Office of the Registrar to advocate for a better course registration system
Interviews with prospective candidates for the Dean of Arts and Sciences position
Stressed the importance of choosing a candidate who understands neurodiversity and ADHD
Stressed the necessity of hiring a Dean who has experience giving critical accommodations, including those related to mental health
Professor Student Town Hall: Advocating against stress culture and the importance of mental health
Policy Moving Forward:
Advocating for increasing the time between classes to 15 minutes per student suggestion; to allow students to make it across campus in time for their next class more easily.
Encouraging professors to offer Zoom and Panopto. COVID is still very much a real thing, and we need to acknowledge that. Even beyond COVID, students should not have to come to class when they are sick or injured- their health should come first.
Furthering Student Assembly's partnership with Academic Wellness to create more workshops related to coursework management, healthy study habits, and existing opportunities for academic support. William and Mary's stress culture is debilitating and unsustainable for students. Developing healthy habits and knowing they have support is important for student success.
Host another town hall for professors, deans, departments and students to create spaces for faculty to hear student feedback and implement it in the classroom
Implementing mid-term evaluations for professors
Working group with neurodiverse students to create better classroom policies and raise awareness around learning accessibility
