Chang & Aqeel

Yannie Chang (she/her)🍓

Hi everyone! My name is Yannie Chang and I'm a junior from Fairfax, VA studying IR and Psychology! I've served as the Class President of 2025 for the past three years (since freshman year!). If anyone has seen my posts from freshman year you'll see I've changed majors around 4 times haha. I hope to work in human rights one day so we'll see where that goes.

My family's originally from El Salvador and Hong Kong so lots of fun foods :) Along with my work in Student Assembly, over the past three years I've served as Co-President of Wordshop, a two-time OA, a member of LASU and CSO, and tried to find my footing as a first generation student at William and Mary. These three years have been filled with advocacy work, and I'll be honest in saying being in Student Assembly has been really hard and mentally overwhelming at times but I've met some of the best people and coolest students through this opportunity.

I'm hoping to continue in this advocacy work and make myself open and available to students as someone to listen and elevate voices. Most importantly, I want to allow more people involved in different areas of campus to have a seat at the table. I believe strongly that the best way to create change and break down the bureaucratic nature of Student Assembly is to give people an opportunity to be there for the conversations and decision making. Overall, I hope to meet everyone, hear your stories, and make people feel like they can come to me as a safe person and friend to talk to. Wishing the best always~Yannie❤️

Hashir Aqeel (he/him)🥭

Hello! My name is Hashir Aqeel and I'm a junior from Woodbridge, Virginia studying Neuroscience.

Coming into college, I decided to run for Student Assembly on a whim, thinking it could be a cool opportunity to get to know other student leaders and gain valuable experience for my future endeavors. Little did I know, my next three years as a Senator for the Class of 2025 would be filled with some of the most foundational experiences of my college career, some incredibly joyful and others equally terrible. From having fierce debates regarding the rights of our student organization, serving as the chair for one of three main Senate committees, writing many hard-fought pieces of legislation, and gaining insight into the operations of student organizations through my time as SASA's treasurer, I know I've gained the necessary experience to serve you well as Vice President.

Having represented my class for the past three years, I know all too well how difficult it can be to make the actual, meaningful changes that the student body needs. It is easy to claim that Student Assembly advocates for our students’ interests and concerns to the administration once a year during election season; I promise to actually do so, even when the subject matter is sensitive and speaking out can feel daunting or uncomfortable.

Kinsley Fandja (she/her)🥥

Hey hey :) my name is Shekina Kinsley Fandja. My hometown is Richmond, Virginia, however, my family and I are from Cameroon, Central Africa. Currently majoring in Government, I hope to someday working in Foreign Policy/International Peacekeeping.

I was drawn to the opportunity to serve as the Chief of Staff to Yannie Chang & Hashir Aqeel, because I believe in their visions for impactful and intentional change within our school community. Their passion for advocating on behalf of a diverse set of students who are often unheard, along with their innovative ideas for improving campus life, align closely with my own values and aspirations.

As a black woman on our William and Mary’s campus, there are countless issues that I not only witness but encounter myself. I belive that working closely with Yannie, Hashir, and the school administration would allow me to be the voice for those who fear theirs is not worthy enough to spark a change. I hope to be a reminder to the non-white student body that leadership roles are held by every single one of us and that we can be the change that we want to see, as this campus belongs to us all. I am excited to collaborate with Yannie and Hashir to implement strategic initiatives, foster inclusivity, and improve overall student experiences.
