FAQ

General

Q: What tools and applications can you recommend for classes like seminars that are discussion-based, not lecture-based?

A: We recommend Zoom for synchronous discussions and the Blackboard discussion board for asynchronous discussions. Please use our recorded webinars and tutorials for hosting synchronous sessions with Zoom. If you would like to use Blackboard discussions, please check out BBhelp to help walk you through the process. For case-specific help with class discussion or collaboration, please request a consultation through KeepTeaching@wm.edu.

Zoom

Q: What do I need to do to get a Zoom pro account -- I'd like to have my seminar meet as a video conference, but we will need to meet for more than 40 minutes.

A: William & Mary now offers Zoom Pro accounts to everyone with a W&M account. Go to http://cwm.zoom.us to log in or visit the William & Mary Zoom information page.

Blackboard

Q: How can I add the webinar sessions, tutorial videos, or other video content to my course in Blackboard?

A: Check out BB Help: add audio and media files to content areas. This link will walk you through how to embed videos that you have saved to your desktop and how to link to videos that may be online.

Panopto

Q: What's the procedure for downloading Panopto onto my BB site?

A: Check out IT’s website on using Panopto, which provides directions for installing Panopto on your computer.

Q: What do my students need to download Panopto?

A: Students don’t need to download any software to view Panopto videos. To access Panopto, you must connect to Blackboard first.

Hardware & Software

Q: My office desktop computer doesn't have a webcam and mic. Where can I request the proper equipment for me to continue my online teaching/delivering the lecture?

A: STLI does not have access to loaner hardware or equipment. Please contact the Reeder Media Center or view their website for further assistance.

Q: Do you have any recommendations for a phone scanner? Scannable is only available iPhone/iPad users.

A: This depends on your scanning needs. Check out this comprehensive review for multiple recommendations (note some some apps are fee-based).

Q: What is the plan to provide online access to specialized software needed for courses that is readily available on campus?

A: W&M currently has software licensing for Blackboard, Panopto, Polls Everywhere, Zoom Pro, and G Suite. Information Technology is working on enhanced VDI solutions for specialized software needs. You can request VDI support via support@wm.edu.
