William Penn
William Penn was an early Quaker and founded the providence of Pennsylvania. He was sent to prison numerous times due to his faith. While in prison Penn wrote the book No Cross, No Crown. Penn went on to write the Pennsylvania Frame of Government. The principals of government included in the Frame of Government inspired the United States Constitution.
William Penn once stated, "Justice is the insurance which we have on our lives and property. Obedience is the premium which we pay for it." This quote states that no one is above the law. In the life of Penn this shows up first with his imprisonment in the Tower of London. Another meaning for the quote could be that without individuals obeying the law, there is no justice. This meaning shows up in one of Penn's arrests, he petitioned the judge to see his charges which was guaranteed by law but the judge refused. This act shows how by the judge not following the law, there could be no justice.
This quote holds true today just as much as it did back when he said it. No one is above the law and that shows in current times. Some examples are how many high ranking officials that break the law are still held accountable for it. For example, in recent times a commander responsible for sexual assault prevention for the United States Air Force was arrested for sexual battery. This goes to show how everyone is responsible for their own actions and are held to the law.
