Week 6
May 12 - May 16
May 12 - May 16
On Monday and Tuesday, Nora worked on the technical aspects of our project, including making the waveform visual corresponding to the audio from our interview with 21 North, while Kaitlyn worked on polishing the blog. Creating the waveform visual requires different software than the usual Premiere Pro we use to edit our audio, instead, we use After Effects, which is pictured in the video below! Learning how to navigate After Effects was initially a challenging feat, but after multiple attempts, we can now create our waveform visual without assistance. Additionally, since we worked hard on completely editing our 21 North episode, we could upload it to the Week 4 blog! This episode is a great listen and touches on the importance of a strong community and how it makes the daunting process of starting a small business worth it.
Wednesday morning, we set our alarms early for a morning interview with the owners of Holistic Wellness Center: Darrah March O’Connor and Sarah Schochet Henken. They told us about how their struggles with different illnesses pushed them to leave their initial career paths and venture into the wellness field. We learned about their holistic approach to wellness; as Sarah says, "you are not just a 'hurt shoulder' but rather a whole person with a 'hurt shoulder'". This holistic approach aims to heal the mind and the body through various modalities, including biohacking devices, massage therapy, reiki, acupuncture, cupping, and holistic health coaching. We even got to interview in their Himalayan salt room, which is proven to relieve stress and improve respiratory health!
On Thursday, we headed to Medfield TV for the last time! We spent the afternoon going through the unedited audio of our interview and cutting out any pauses or stumbles using Adobe Premiere Pro. We used After Effects to make the waveform visual and then uploaded our final episode to our blog! This project has taught us so much about the work it requires to film and edit podcasts. Although it may seem easy, we quickly learned that it is a very time-demanding process since there are many variables controlling when we release episodes, such as our schedules, the business owners' schedules, Medfield TV's hours, the availability of recording equipment, and the time it takes to edit our recordings. Learning about these constraints shifted our goals for this project from initially trying to make 2-3 episodes a week to realizing that we only had enough time for one. We are so grateful for our inside mentor, Ms.McCrossan, our outside mentor, Ms.Duval, and all of the small business owners who helped us complete our project!
