Yoga is one of the forms of fitness activity any time. That becomes even more true when we are stuck in our houses and have very limited equipment. Practicing yoga works on all aspects of physical and mental health. Yoga is strength training, flexibility, core work, balance, and cardio. It is also concentration, positive thinking, and self-awareness. We encourage all students to get involved in and practice yoga during this time. Please refer to the Blake Fitness Calendar to find options for Yoga workouts that can be done at home.
When most people think of strength training, they think of going to the gym and lifting weights. For most of us, those things are not possible right now. Unless you have your own gym at home, you must find a way to strength train without equipment. Fortunately, you have all been doing strength training without equipment in your physical education classes this year. Our Warrior Warm-up is a great example of strength training. The body weight squats, push-ups, dips, lunges, planks, wall sits, step up, etc. are all examples of strength training exercises that don't require equipment. For more ideas, please reference the Blake Fitness Calendar.
Cardiovascular exercise is another very important type of activity that can help you both physically and mentally. Some of you have stationary bikes, treadmills, or elliptical machines in your homes. However, a lot of us don't have access to that type of equipment. On nice days, you could go out for a walk, run or bike ride and still follow the guidelines of social distancing. If you like music, this is a great opportunity to listen to music, disconnect from reality for a little bit and get some good exercise. Just make sure to keep your distance and be safe. When you get home, you should shower, change your clothes and make sure that you keep your sneakers outside.
Flexibility is one of the most important yet one of the most overlooked components of fitness. Increased flexibility will allow you to perform athletically and avoid injury (just ask Tom Brady). Stretching/Flexibility is an important part of any fitness routine. Certainly, flexibility is a component of yoga, palates and other fitness activities and can be accomplished through taking part in those activities. But, if you run, bike, strength train, etc., you should make sure that you warm-up correctly and finish with some flexibility/stretching activities.
Agility is also a very important part of any fitness program. Someone who is agile is able to move quickly from one place to another. Agility training is designed to train your body to move as quickly as possible from one place to another. Agility is an enormously important part of many popular sports. Athletes involved in lacrosse, soccer, field hockey, ice hockey, basketball, tennis, track, etc. rely on their agility to help them be successful in their athletic contests. There are examples of agility training on the Blake Fitness Calendar.
