Medication-based treatment for opioid use disorder combines the use of FDA-approved medications with behavioral treatments. Medications used consist of opioid antagonists and full or partial opioid agonists that reduce the euphoric effects of opioids while preventing withdrawal side and preventing continued misuse of other opioids.1 Chronic pain costs billions of dollars each year and has been linked to other problems such as mobility difficulties, mental health issues, opioid use disorder (OUD), and other conditions.2 The learning materials on this page focus on addressing the different types of medications used in treatment, disparities in medications for opioid use disorder, and the future of medications for opioid use disorder.
