Unit 1: My School and School Community
The children will identify people in their classroom community. They will understand the purpose of the items within the classroom and how rules support their classroom/school. This supports the student’s understanding of why communities need rules and their responsibilities.
Unit 2: Self and Others
The children will understand that people have similarities and differences. The children will learn to appreciate and celebrate those differences (language, race, traditions, religion, traditions, customs, etc.) This unit also touches on important national symbols (American Flag, National Anthem) that help develop shared culture and identity.
Unit 3: Geography, People, and the Environment
The children will focus on our community/neighborhood. They will learn about the various features of a community, including transportation. The children will engage in lessons about community helpers and their jobs/responsibilities. The children will gain an understanding that our community is part of Long Island, Long Island is part of NY, NY is part of the United States, and the United States is part of the world.
Unit 4: Families, Change, and Time
The children will identify family members (intermediate/extended). They will understand why families are important and understand the various roles/responsibilities of family members. The children will compare and contrast different types of families. They will also learn about how communities change over time.
