Children will study the tricky parts of writing snap words and develop a strategy to help them remember the correct spelling
Apply phonics rules to try different ways to write tricky words and use conventional spelling with greater accuracy
Children will work to be more consistent in using appropriate punctuation as they go rather than during the revision or editing process
Children will be introduced to homophones and study the connection between spelling and meaning
Students study rhymes and identify the rime (string of letters) to write new words (i.e. make -> cake. lake, bake
Children will learn to tackle multisyllabic words part by part
Children will explore vowel sounds and learn how to try different sounds while tackling a tricky word
Children will take a deeper look at consonant sounds and explore the differences between hard and soft sounds as well as silent consonants
Children will apply what they know about familiar inflectional endings to help them solve multisyllabic words
This unit builds on the world students learned previously to tackle big words and focuses now on spelling big words. Children will:
Children will apply all that they know about vowels (long and short sounds, vowel teams, silent e etc.) to spelling
Children will construct words by considering each syllable
Children will review the words they write and ask themselves, “Does it look right?” “Does it look like similar words that I have seen in books?”
Children will study a series of words focusing on the vowel sounds, make generalizations about the way words are constructed and sort them into categories
Children will be be on the lookout for additional words found in their reading and environment and bring them back to their group for further study
Children will apply what they learned while constructing and deconstructing words to develop a vowel manual
In this unit students will work to grow their vocabulary by studying words that they encounter in reading and everyday life.
Children will collect words, study them and sort them into categories (i.e. words that go together by topic, naming words, describing words)
Children will use context clues to learn the meaning of the words they collect
Children will apply strategies to learn compound words
Children will learn base words and then how to apply them to learn new words
Children will learn a series of prefixes and suffixes to learn more words
