Students have multiple decisions to make as they make their way through our mathematics courses. We believe that students develop their talents as mathematicians at different rates. Many students elect to take on additional challenge in mathematics in middle school or at York High School. We've built in many opportunities for students and their parents to make choices about their mathematics courses to best meet their future needs.
A small number of gifted or academically talented students enter our REACH math program in 3rd grade, placing them on a double accelerated path that ends in Calculus 3. It is possible to enter this pathway through appeals later than 3rd grade.
The vast majority of students will take college preparatory mathematics through 6th grade Math 1 where they have a decision to make for 7th grade. Students (and parents) have the choice between Accelerated PreAlgebra and Math 2 for 7th grade. Accelerated PreAlgebra combines the core standards of 7th grade and 8th grade into a one year accelerated course. That allows students to take Algebra in 8th grade and AP Calculus AB or AP Calculus BC their senior year.
Students that elect to take Math 2 in 7th grade still have many choices. At York, students in this pathway take Algebra their Freshman year and then can elect to take honors courses starting with Geometry as a sophomore. They can also take Geometry during the summer between their freshman and sophomore years to prepare for AP Calculus as a senior.
