All about plants!

Year 3’s new topic in science is plants! We have been learning all about the different parts of the plant and we found out that some parts are male and some parts are female! To help us remember the different parts, we created actions. Here are some photos from this lesson.

Rowan class go back in time!

In History we have been learning about Rome. Today we had the chance to use Virtual Reality headsets and transport ourselves back in time and visited a Roman Bath. We learnt all about what the Romans did there, how the water stayed heated and what the baths looked like. We loved it and learnt lots of new things!

Rowan Class

This week we are continuing to work on our spoken word project. In two weeks we are taking part with seven other schools in a symposium of our spoken word poems. They are all about us and the tile of our piece is 'We are amazing!' Manic Arts have been working with us.

This week in Rowan we have been learning about how matter can changes states. What happens when you start to eat an ice-cream? or the kettle boils? We have looked at how water can be a solid, liquid or gas and how these changes are reversible. It's fun to understand what is happening when you take a shower and the bathroom fills up with steam or why your ice melts in your drink.

NHS DAY!

Today we celebrated 70 years of the NHS!

We learnt about the history of the NHS (it started in 1948) and we celebrated by making posters and designing our own costumes for the NHS staff. We all dressed up as doctors, patients and dentists. We were also lucky enough to get a visit from Brandon's mum who is a paramedic. She gave us a tour of the ambulance and even put the siren on! It was a great day to have the chance to say thank you to everyone that works for the NHS that have helped us.

Hannah Jane Lewis visits SHP

This morning, children in Years 4 and 5 were very excited to have singer songwriter Hannah Jane Lewis perform live for them in school! As well as performing two of her own songs and two covers, Hannah shared an important message about how to stay safe online and how to deal with cyber bullying. Year 4 and 5 showed fantastic understanding of her message and were a great audience!

A few children got to meet Hannah and have their picture taken with her after the assembly.

Last week we wrote a poem about Snow White and the seven Dwarfs. We based our poems on Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes version of Snow White’s story. We had to use rhyming couplets and we had to create a twist in the story. We really enjoyed writing these poems.

Trip to the Cinema

By Rowan Class

On Wednesday 7th February Year 4 went to the cinema in West Bromwich to watch 'The Greatest Showman'. This half term we have been learning to be performers. So we went to watch 'The Greatest Showman' to inspire us. In the film there is lots of drama, fantastic choreography and singing. This film also teaches us about not judging people by the way they look and not treating people differently. Our favourite part as a class was that they kept going and didn't give up.

When we got back we wrote a film review of it. You can read one of them below.

Healthy Eating

On Monday a nurse came to our classes and spoke to us about healthy eating. She showed us a plate of what we should eat more of and what we should have less of. We should eat more fruit and vegetables, protein. We should eat less of foods with sugar and fat in because it isn’t good for your body and heart. She then sent us off to our tables to draw a healthy meal on plates and lunchboxes. We enjoyed the session and learnt some new information.

Orienteering :)

This half term, Year 3 have been learning all about geography. As part of our learning journey, we did some orienteering on the North Playground. In order to do this, we have been doing some work on aerial view maps. We used the map to navigate us to hidden stars and reveal the hidden code. This was so much fun and we really enjoyed ourselves!

Mother's day Magnets!

This half term in Science, we have been learning about magnets and forces. We have been looking at different types of magnets and their strengths. This week Clover class made some Mother's day magnets. We used all our knowledge about magnets to make a fridge magnet out of paper. We had to make sure the strength of the magnet was enough to hold up the weight of the paper.

wow day in Clover class

Today in Clover class we had our WOW day. Next half term, year 3 will focus on becoming Religiously Literate. We had a great time looking at lots of objects from different religions. We learnt about Islam, Christianity, Judaism , Buddhism, Hinduism and Sikhism. We are really excited about next term! Here are some pictures from today:

On Tuesday, Birch class (and the rest of Year 4), took part in a Blue Planet Live Lesson on the BBC along with dozens of other schools and hundreds of other children across the country. We learned that the Earth is made up of 70% water. We learned about some of the issues affecting our oceans and the animals that live in them like over-fishing, plastic pollution and climate change. We also learned that there are many things that we can do to help protect the oceans, especially plastic pollution. We learned about the 3 Rs of plastic: reduce, reuse and recycle.

Birch class enjoyed the lesson and learning about ways that we can help our oceans. We would highly recommend other classes and year groups also watch the lesson while it is still available on the BBC website.

Saba says, "It was a very interesting lesson."

Faris says, "I learned some new things."

Natalija says, "It was fantastic to learn about ways we can help our planet."

Nathan says, "I would have liked it more if it had featured more sea creatures."

We Are Designers!

This term year 3 are designers. We are designing our very own picture frames to hold a picture of ourselves. Last week, we used pipe cleaners to investigate different structures. We wanted to discover which structures would be the most stable and strong. We found that triangular prisms were much stronger than cylinders and cuboids. We also found that we had to reinforce our structures to make them sturdy. We will use this knowledge to help us design and build a picture frame that is strong and stable.

Millie said, “The lesson was interesting and it gave us lots of information of how to improve our work.”

“We got to learn new things,” commented Aiela

Aqsa stated, “When we used pipe cleaners, they made it very stable.”

“We found out different ways to make it [the structure] stable,” thought Laaibah.

“I learnt that a triangular prism is stable,” Haadi said.

Influential British People!

In History, Year 3 have been learning about influential British people. We have found out about: William Wilberforce, Elizabeth Fry, Lord Shaftesbury and Florence Nightingale. All of these people have one thing in common and that is that they have all made a huge difference to the lives of people in Britain and beyond.

William Wilberforce helped to abolish slavery, whilst Elizabeth Fry helped to improve conditions in prisons. Lord Shaftesbury's legacy was that he fought for the rights of children and was one of the key individuals responsible for bringing about reform of Britain’s factories, improving working conditions and limiting the length of the workday. Most recently, we have been learning about Florence Nightingale, who helped to improve the conditions of hospitals.

We have really enjoyed finding out about these incredible and heroic people. They have inspired us and we thank them for their immense impact on all our lives.

Clover Class.

Mighty Myths!

This term we have started a new topic in English about Ancient Greek myths. We have had a lot of fun so far.

We started by reading the myth of Medusa, Odysseus and Theseus and the Minotaur. We then acted out each myth with great enthusiasm. It was really interesting thinking about how the characters move and feel inside. Here are some of our pictures:

our Church trip

The children in Birch class have been learning to become religiously literate this half term and this is a topic that we have been thoroughly enjoying.

A few weeks ago, we made a trip to the Raglan Road Christian Church. We were greeted warmly by the Church Elder and with some squash and a biscuit!

We learned all about the Church and the different programmes they have each week for the people that attend, including, toddler groups, a food bank and movie night! We also learned about the baptism pool that they have under their stage.

It was a good experience and a chance to learn all about a different type of church.

Descriptive Delights!

In English, we have been focusing on the Secret Life of Pets. After watching the film, we have been developing our descriptive language. We have described the character's appearance and personality.

This helped us to then create our own imaginative pets. Once we had designed our creature, we used all the descriptive language we had developed to write a paragraph about our pet's appearance and personality.

Below, you can see a great descriptive paragraph about Snowball by Aashish and a brilliant illustration of one of our imaginative pets, Flyper, by Amaya!

Exciting Times in Hawthorn!

Since coming back from half term, we have been introduced to new, fascinating subjects in English, Learning for Life and Science. We are all so excited that we wanted to share what we are learning with everyone.

This term, we are learning about rocks in Science. We are excited about our new topic because we think rocks are interesting and wonderful. We think rocks ROCK!

In Learning for Life, we are exploring the Earth and volcanoes. We were 'wow'd' by watching a volcano erupt and look forward to investigating more about volcanoes. It would be amazing if we could make our own erupting volcanoes.

As part of our English work, we watched parts of The Secret Life Of Pets. Most of the class thought the film was very funny especially when Duke sat on top of Max and when Max was going to get initiated by Snowball. If you enjoy comedy movies, then we would highly recommend this movie. We give this movie 5 stars out of 5.

The Time Capsule

Last Friday, Birch class and the rest of Year 4, along with Years 3 and 5, watched a performance of a play called The Time Capsule.

The play followed two children, Dotty and Ollie, who find a trunk in an old, abandoned primary school. In the trunk, they found many things from World War 1, including, flags, pictures, a gramophone and even a bedpan! They also found love letters between two people called Harry and Vera and the play also told their story in flashback.

The play taught us many things about World War 1, like how some young men lied about their age to join the army and how wooden Tommie's were used. Lots of children also got involved and got to be actors too!

Here are some reviews from some of the children in Birch class:

  • "It was very interesting." Nathan
  • "It was very funny and I learned lots of things about World War 1." Aayan
  • "It was really fun, but I didn't like the singing." Malika
  • "It was a bit too long." Zaina
  • "It was very enjoyable." Maryan

Birch class gave the play 4 stars out of 5.

YEAR 3 ORIENTEERING!

This week, in Learning for Life, we took part in orienteering. First of all, 9 blue stars were hidden in the South Playground. Then, in groups of 4, we worked together and, with the help of a map, we located the stars. On the back of each star there was a letter, which we had to note down on our maps. Once we had found all the stars, we put all the letters together to make a word.

We really enjoyed orienteering because it was fun and exciting trying to be the first group to crack the code. There was a reward of 20 points for that team.

We cracked the code, which was GEOGRAPHY!

Year 3's Keyboard Concert!

Over the academic year, year 3 have been attending music lessons where they have been learning how to play the keyboard. With the skills they had learnt, they put together several pieces of music and rehearsed these for their concert which took place this week. During the concert, the children played with such confidence and they really showed off their skills set! Some children even went on to performing solo pieces.

Well done Year 3! :)

Stunning Start!

Stunning Start!

At the beginning of term, year 3 were fortunate to have a special visitor to come and see them. Each class took turns to see our guest in forest school. Our visitor’s name was Sue and she was a story teller.

First, Sue shown us all the natural treasures of forest school. We explored lots of different leaves, flowers and feathers. The best treasure was a sticky plant that stuck to our jumpers.

After that, Sue performed several different poems. Our favourite poem was ‘Gran can you Rap?’ and some of us even performed it in front of the class. It was really funny!

Then, we settled down and listened to a story about a magic carpet. We really like this story because we could join in. Sue asked us to do some actions every time we heard certain sentences or words.

Finally, we made our own scary story with Sue’s help. The devilish Bloodwart was up to no good! We had to carry on the story.

WOW DAY!

Next half term year 3 will become Artists. To prepare ourselves for this, we had a WOW day where we got to find out about lots of amazing artists. We learnt about Monet,Picasso , Georges Seurat, Banksy, cave paintings, cartoons and many more. We were inspired by the different forms of art and had a go at recreating some of the art work! Here are some of our pieces of art:
