Firefighter

Volunteer firefighters in the Ellicott City Volunteer Fire Department respond to a variety of emergencies including fires, rescues, HAZMAT incidents, and EMS calls. Firefighters respond to emergencies on fire engines, ladder trucks, rescue squads, and other vehicles.

Volunteers begin as probationary members and will complete coursework and training prior to being cleared to function independently on an apparatus. Probationary firefighters will complete courses and receive certifications in Firefighter I, HAZMAT Operations, and EMT-B. Firefighters must receive cross-training as an EMT within two years.

Opportunities for advancement include learning how to drive and operate apparatus ranging from trucks to heavier apparatus like fire engines, vehicle extrication and rescue, and leadership.
