The goal of this part of the unit is for students to understand how people who build structures for a living construct things in a way that are solid and will last. Students examine how buildings are framed and put together following building diagrams. As 6th Graders, they built framed models of homes in Science in their Green Architecture PLTW Unit. Going through the Design Process students will also use basic architecture/drafting tools to learn how architects draw floor plans using a board, t-square, and triangle/straight-edge. After learning to draw floor plans of houses, students bring their floor plans to life using SketchUp for Schools (CAD) software. Students will build on this and learn how to use CAD Software to design interior and exterior models of Tiny Homes as well as design and 3D Print a model of a framed wall with a window and a door.
