What is the SITE Institute?

The SITE Institute is a multi-day workshop-based seminar that takes place in both August (SITE Summer Institute) and February (SITE Winter Institute) at El Camino College. The theme of the Institute, which is determined in August, changes each year but is based on one central inquiry question:

Central Inquiry Question for 2019-2020

"How do we re-frame our beliefs to eliminate inequitable practices and to cultivate authentic learning?"

Central Inquiry Question for 2018-2019

"What do we know and what do we want to know about how people learn?"

How does it work?

The SITE Institute was designed to create a community of instructors at the beginning of the academic year (end of summer) in order to stimulate an ongoing dialogue that is based on the factors that contribute to student success.

During the institute, participants hear from guest speakers, the SITE facilitators, and each other as well as do intensive scholarly reading by experts in the field, and then participants practice applying what they've learned in small and large group settings.

At the end of the SITE Institute and as part of Professional Development Day, participants form interdisciplinary focused learning communities (FLCs) to explore aspects of the central question more deeply over the course of the academic year and through the lens of their choosing.

FLCs then create, implement, and evaluate activities for their classrooms, which they prepare to share with the campus community at the end of the academic year.

In February, FLC members or those looking to participate in SITE are invited to attend another multi-day workshop (SITE Winter Institute) to reboot, reconnect, and possibly begin or join an existing FLC.
