*Students planning to enter or transfer into a University System of Georgia institution or other post-secondary institution must take two units of the same modern language. Many out of state schools require or prefer 3 or more courses. Georgia Department of Technical and Adult Education (DTAE) institutions (Technical College System of Georgia) do not require modern language for admissions.

Career Technical and Agriculture Education Pathway Completion – awarded to students who complete a minimum of 3 Career Technical and Agriculture Education (CTAE) courses in a self-selected area of concentration and who may take a related national credentialing assessment when applicable.


Science Requirements Guidelines

Class of 2012 and beyond

Under the current graduation rule, students who enter 9th grade in 2008-2009 and after are required to complete four units of science. It is important to remember:

  • The fourth science does not necessarily have to be taken in the student’s fourth, or senior, year.

  • The student’s postsecondary plans should be discussed before fourth science courses are selected.

  • Fourth science courses will count in the student’s HOPE Scholarship GPA calculation.

The rule is as follows:

4 units of Science required, including:

1 unit of Physical Science or Physics (can be AP/IB)

Courses at ECCHS that meet this requirement are:

  • Physical Science

  • Honors Physical Science

1 unit of Biology (can be AP/IB)

Courses at ECCHS that meet this requirement are:

  • Biology

  • Honors Biology

1 unit of Chemistry, Earth Systems, Environmental Science, or an AP/IB course

Courses at ECCHS that meet this requirement are:

  • Chemistry*

  • Honors Chemistry*

  • Environmental Science

  • AP Environmental Science*

  • Earth Systems (only available through Connexus Credit Recovery or Blue Devil 101)

1 unit of a 4th science, including any AP/IB, academic science, or career tech science

Courses at ECCHS that meet this requirement are:

  • Any course listed above

  • Human Anatomy & Physiology*

  • Forest Science (must have completed Basic ag and Ag Mechanics 1 to register for this course)

  • General Horticulture & Plant Science (must have completed Basic ag and Ag Mechanics 1 to register for this course)

  • Food for Life (must have credit for Food, Nutrition & Wellness to register for this course)

  • Food Science (3rd course in Food & Nutrition pathway)

  • AP Computer Science Principles*– (it is recommended that a student complete the Web Design pathway to register for this course)

Please note: Only those science courses marked with an asterisk (*) will meet the HOPE Scholarship Rigor requirement.

Graduation from high school represents a major accomplishment in your life! It is a starting point for your future. This goal includes moving to your next step in life prepared for the next step in your career goals. These activities prepare you for an immediate transition to a career, or the next step in training for a career by attending technical school or a university.
