What are our Legal Protections as Unionizing Educators?
It’s important to know that participating in unionizing activities is a legally protected right for educators. It’s against the law for any administrator to discriminate against educators involved in the unionization process. Most administrators understand this and know that violating these laws could lead to serious consequences.
What is our relationship with CTA and NEA?
As a local union, the EEC is made up of educators from Albert Einstein Academies and will be led by those elected by our colleagues. We are also affiliated with the California Teachers Association (CTA) and the National Education Association (NEA), both of which provide us with valuable support. CTA and NEA advocate for better school funding and legislation that benefits educators and students alike. They’ve helped charter school educators across the state, including at other charter networks, ensure that teachers have a strong voice in decisions that impact their schools.
What Happens now that we are Unionized?
Now that we’ve officially unionized, we’ll establish our own bylaws and elect a leadership team that represents us all. Typically, local unions have roles like president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer, with representatives from each school site. This leadership team will lead contract negotiations, support union members, and work alongside educators to set priorities. Importantly, once now that we have a union, administration won’t be able to make changes to our working conditions without our consent. This means we’ll have a direct say in decisions that affect our classrooms and our profession. Keep a look out for Information on upcoming elections.
Will there be union dues?
Yes, union members do pay dues, which help support both local and national efforts to improve schools. At EEC, dues won’t start until we’ve negotiated and voted on our first contract, so you’ll be able to weigh the benefits of the contract against the dues, which are typically around $40-$50 per pay period.
Are Unions Against Charter Schools?
No, this is a common misconception. Our union's focus is on improving our school, ensuring that educators have fair standards, and creating the best environment for our students. CTA and NEA advocates for transparency, equity, proper facilities, and better funding to ensure that both district and charter schools serve their students effectively.
How Can I Help?
One of the best ways to support our unionizing efforts is by joining the organizing committee, helping guide the process, and engaging our colleagues. For those who may not have the time to take on a larger role, you can still support by showing up and spreading the info on upcoming events giving input on important issues, and backing our bargaining team.
