Tuesday, 9/19- DC
Senior Digital Citizenship 1
Have the students come in and get out their chromebooks. They will need them for the lesson. Also, have them find a partner they can talk to and share with for this lesson
1.Ask the students, “What would you define as screen time? How much screen time in a day is too much or unhealthy?”
Have the students pair share and then ask for some students to share out (5 minutes)
2.Have the students view the video, “Screen Time: How Much is Too Much?” either on their own, with their partners or as a class. .
You can project the video yourself, have the kids watch it on their chromebooks on their own, or they can watch it with the partners on the chromebook. It is up to you. Just have them watch the video. (5 minutes)
3.Have the students make a list of all the times they are on their screens. Remind them to include time they are at school, at home working on school, on their phones, and all other forms of screen time they can think of.
For them this is making a list on their chromebooks. They can use a google doc, sheet or form, just list what they are on and how long they are on each device. Ask them also to define each as active or passive, meaning are they just scrolling through things or are they actively using the screen (school work is an example of this) (5 - 7 minutes)
4.For this final part, have them go to the google form and write one statement on their screen time use. All we want to them analize is if they are on their screens too much, or not and if they are more passive or active when they are on the screen. Remind them to make sure they give three reasons why when they do the evelatuation.
They will make the evaluation of the screen time using the two sentence starters below:
I am on my screen (too much/just right/too little) because…
I am on my screen more (actively/passively) than (actively/passively) because…
When they have finished the final part, have them pack up and get ready to leave for their next class.
Please share these links with your students so they can complete the lesson in the class:

Below is a note from the Family Engagement Crew
Valley is hoping to have the best turn-out yet for Open House on April 18th. To that end, we are hoping that all teachers will send out personalized Talking Points messages to the parents/guardians of their Viking Time students. This will be a little bit of work, but we are hoping that the personal touch will help parents and guardians see that we really, really, really want them to come and see what their students have been up to this year. To make things easier for you, here’s something you can cut and paste into Talking Points. Feel free to modify it. We’re hoping that if you spend a few minutes on this during each Viking Time day this week, it will be pretty fast and simple. Thank you for your consideration!
-The Family Engagement Crew
Good day Mr/Ms [parent/guardian name]. On Thursday, April 18th, Valley High is hosting Open House. This is an opportunity for you to come see what [student name] is doing in school.
