At South Effingham Middle School, we offer a variety of opportunities for students to explore different occupational pathways and career options. Throughout the students' years at SEMS, students can explore diverse connections classes, PBLs, and interdisciplinary lessons that highlight the discovery aspect of many careers. Several of our connection classes support the GaDOE Career, Technology, and Agriculture Education (CTAE) which consists of various program concentrations of Career Pathways that have been developed for students to select and complete.

The SEMS School Counseling Department provides career lessons for grades 6th through 8th grade. The Georgia Department of Education requires that the BRIDGE (Building Resourceful Individuals to Develop Georgia's Economy) law be followed each year to help educate students in their career development. We use a program called Youscience that helps students identify careers based on aptitudes and natural abilities, and how they relate to specific careers. In 6th grade, students complete the Youscience Snippet, which is an interest inventory. This activity helps identify their top three types of work (social, artistic, realistic, conventional, investigative, or enterprising). In 7th grade, students continue to use Youscience and complete the career aptitude inventory. The students complete 6 brain games that will help identify their natural abilities and aptitudes. In 8th grade, students continue to use Youscience with their career development skills. We go over their career interest and career aptitude inventory results. Students can research different careers from the aptitude inventory results. We encourage students to search for education requirements, annual salary, job descriptions, and prospective job growth.
How can you create and maintain a successful pumpkin patch at Honey Ridge Agricenter and market our products to consumers (ex. Honey Ridge Fall Festival)?
6th Grade PBL
How can a comparison of sustainable agriculture (ex. stocks) inspire us to design a productive and environmentally responsible farm that contributes to the well-being of our community?
7th Grade PBL
How can you use renewable energy to create solutions to lessen the expense for energy consumption at HRA or enhance it without increasing the energy consumption?
8th grade students researched alternative and renewable energy sources that could be used locally. Then they had to determine a way to actively engage 6th graders as well as their other peers, teachers, administrators, and other stakeholders while still teaching about the energy sources and how changing the way we retrieve/create electricity in our area can help our community. This portion of the PBL will lead to prototypes and/or thoughtful recommendations to lessen the impact or cost of electricity at Honey Ridge.
