Students at South Effingham Middle School conduct investigative research during both academic and connections classes, as well as during the STEA2M period, to make claims, collect evidence, analyze data, and argue for solutions to real-world problems using evidence collected.
STEA2M learning period allows students to participate in investigative research regularly. All of our students participate in STEA2M Extension lessons during the STEA2M period every Friday from 8:30-9:20 am. We have a whole school STEA2M period to provide dedicated time for STEA2M projects. Our STEA2M projects are collaboratively planned by academic and connections teachers. Each of our STEA2M projects focuses on integrating the disciplines and provides students with the opportunities to work collaboratively to find solutions to real-world problems. Students apply the STEA2M design process during the STEA2M period.
Student research is communicated to a public audience that includes business and community partners, and regional, state, or national competition judges by various means such as written, oral, and digital presentations. Students have presented at South Effingham Middle School’s STEA2M night, STEA2M Advisory Meetings, and to their peers and administrators at the end of many of our PBLs and projects as well as in the classrooms regularly.
Students who are also in clubs such as STEA2M Club, Science Olympiad, Future Farmers of America, and many other clubs provide students with the opportunity to communicate with a public audience that includes businesses, community partners, and even judges.
