What We're Learning
We would like to share with you we are working on it class! As we go through the year we will update you on our next topics of study and areas of focus. We encourage students to have conversations with their families about what we are studying and to share what they learn.

October 2021
Everyone
We will be focusing on reading strategies and comprehension by partaking in novel studies. Both the grade 6s and the grade 7s will take part in activies related to the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action.
Grade 6
Students will begin learning about the Rights of a Child by reading the story Iqbal. We will take a closer look at the different types of government with particular attention to Democracy within Canada.
Grade 7
Students will explore the novel Number the Stars as a way to understand the past. Students will also focus on canada's beginning by exploring the early First Nations and understanding how Imperialism impacted exploration.
TERM 2
Feb. 2022
Grade 6:
Students are exploring how to represent proportions and relate them in a variety of ways. They will work with Ratio, Decimals, Percentages and Fractions. Students will begin by representing Ratio and Percents as pictures, moving into more symbolic ways of representing.
This study will lead into an exploration of Decimals and Fractions - how do we order them, and convert between them. Grade 6 students will practice this skill with fractions out of 10 and 100, or fractions that can be turned into a fraction out of 100 using equivalents.
The next step in their study will take us into an exploration of fractions larger than a whole. Students will learn how to represent a fraction as a mixed number and an improper fraction. They will work to build their ability to convert between the two forms, relying on their understanding of factors and multiples to do so.
Grade 7:
Students began the term partway through their study of integers - specifically how to order them and how to add and subtract with any combination of positive and negative numbers.
Students will move into a study of Fraction, Decimal and Percent. We will begin with a thorough review of the concepts outlined in the Grade 6 section above. From there, the grade sevens will begin adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators. They will explore divisibility strategies that will support their ability to identify common factors. They will rely heavily on their understanding of factors and multiples to do this work.
TERM 2
Feb. 2022
Grade 6:
Students are finishing up our study of Sky Science. They will explore the predictable cycles in space such as constellations, moon phases, and seasons.
Students will explore the different conditions on the planets in our Solar System. They will apply an understanding of the technologies used on earth for exploration and shelter to design a Rover, Habitat, or Probe for a chosen planet.
Grade 7:
Students are finishing up our study of Plants: For Food & Fibre. We are currently planting our native species and will transfer them to a grow tower as they begin to sprout. Students are researching one of these plants in order to identify preferred growing conditions, plant parts & functions, and historical & modern uses. They will make connections back to our Interactions in Ecosystems Topic to identify the role and importance of their plant in the prairie ecosystem.
In the coming weeks we will be moving into our next topic of study: Heat & Temperature. Students will investigate heat as a form of kinetic energy. They will examine how heat transfers, on a particle level, and identify the impact of insulators. This study will culminate in a large design project.
