Health Aims
Health is taught as an independent subject for years 3 - 6. Students gaining a stronger understanding of health being a fulfilment of a person's Physical, Mental and Social well-being. Students are given the opportunity to explore the impacts diet, exercise and sleep have on our physical health, additionally, the different systems and organs that make up our bodies and the functions they do to keep us healthy and alive.
We also develop students’ capacity to identify and express their emotions to develop students resiliency and mental health awareness. We investigate Social health, which explores how we develop community, make connections with others and what strategies need to be in place for a community to be healthy.
This Semester in Health
In Health this term we will be exploring the different changes that our bodies go through in response to environmental conditions and work loads. This will be looking at both short term changes like shivering, sweating or heart rate as well as long term changes like muscle growth, respiration efficiency and gut flora.
This will include looking at our Skeletal, Muscular, Respiratory, Nervous, Gastrointestinal and Circulatory Systems.
Note: this does not include the reproductive system
Below is a sample of some of the different things that will be covered under different topics over the year.
Physical health
DIET: Major food groups, purpose of different nutrients, how to have a balanced diet.
SLEEP: Purpose and importance of good sleep, what happens while you're asleep.
EXERCISE: Types of different exercise, benefits of exercise, changes to your body (long and short term).
HYGIENE: Importance of good hygiene on our physical, mental and social health.
DISEASE: What happens when you get sick (immune system), long and short term effects.
BODILY SYSTEMS: The different organ systems in our body (skeletal, respiratory, muscular, etc). - this does not include the reproductive system.
Mental Health
EMOTIONAL AWARENESS: Why and how do we feel emotions
EMOTIONAL REGULATION: What is a 'healthy' response to an emotion
MENTAL ILLNESS: Impact of mental illness, how and when to get help.
Social Health
MAKING CONNECTIONS: How, where and why do we make connections with others.
COMMUNITY GROUPS: Where are the different places that support community connection and involvement.
WHAT MAKES A COMMUNITY HEALTHY: What are the different things that a community needs in order to thrive.
