Fractions can only be added/subtracted if they have the same denominator (like fractions); fractions in the same family (related fractions) can be added or subtracted by renaming the parts. (E.g. to subtract 4 ninths from 2 thirds. 2/3s needs to be renamed as 6 ninths.)
