Aim:To make and test the properties of Hydrogen gas.
Equipment:
2 test tubes and rack
piece of magnesium ribbon
hydrochloric acid (2m)
matches
heat proof mat
Risk Assessment: You must wear both your lab coat and safety goggles as you will be working with hydrochloric acid, matches and glassware from the lab.
Method:
Into one test tube place one piece of magnesium ribbon
Carefully place one dropper full of hydrochloric acid into the test tube with the magnesium.
Immediately invert the other test tube over the one with magnesium and hydrochloric acid and trap the gas that is being made.
Do not remove the test tube at the top, making sure it has a neat seal over the bottom test tube and keep it upside down.
Test the gas that has been made by putting a lit match into the mouth of the top test tube.
