Year 10 Core Program

As the educational and technological demands by business and industry for future employees increase rapidly, it is essential our students are well informed and equipped for employment.

This unit will cover the issues of self-awareness and labour market realities as well as develop the skills and tools necessary for job seeking success. Students learn how to complete a resume and how to apply for a job.

Students will study a unit of Year 11 Work Related Skills in the Careers program in Year 10. This VCE VM subject examines a range of skills, knowledge and capabilities relevant to achieving individual career and educational goals. Students will develop a broad understanding of workplace environments and the future of work and education, in order to engage in theoretical and practical planning and decision-making for a successful transition to their desired pathway.

Work Experience

As part of their Careers studies all students in Year 10 undertake a week of work experience towards the end Term 2.

This program provides students with a short-term placement with employers to provide insights into the industry and the workplace in which they are located.

Students will observe different aspects of work within their chosen industry and may assist with tasks allocated by their supervisor but cannot perform tasks which require extensive training or expertise.

Work Experience contributes to greater knowledge of careers and course and pathway options.

Placements with parents/carers or other relatives are not recommended, as students will benefit more from meeting new challenges in new environments.

Please note a work experience placement is a compulsory component of Careers study, and students are expected to find their own placements.

In Year 10 English students are preparing themselves for the rigours of VCE English. Students hone skills they have learnt in years 7-9, as well as developing complexity of thought on the texts and issues they study. Students will explore how characters are created and  write their own creative piece, demonstrating the knowledge and skills they have learned. We study a mix of contemporary and classical works, including film as text. The class will examine how language is used to persuade in various media.

Throughout these units we focus on developing students’ analytical skills to deepen their understanding of characters and themes, which they demonstrate through classwork, participation in discussions and written assessments. 

Developing our students’ essay writing skills is a major focus for the year; therefore students are provided with many opportunities to practise. Students write their essays under exam conditions, further preparing them for the standard required in VCE English.

Year 10 Health and Physical Education focus is on developing knowledge and skills for lifelong health and fitness and includes engaging in a breadth of physical activities including activities such as boxing, weight/circuit training, golf, yoga, tennis and squash.

In health classes students will learn about the benefits of physical activity, human body systems, nutrition for athletes, first aid and sports injury management.

Students will also complete the “Pre-Driver Education” program learning the importance of vehicle and driving safety.

Year 10 Humanities is a subject in which the curriculum provides a study of the history of the modern world and Australia from 1918 to 1967, with an emphasis on Australia in its global context.

This includes the study of the causes and progress of World War 2, as well as the development of rights and freedoms after WW2 with a particular emphasis on the experience of Australia’s First Peoples.

In Geography students investigate issues of wellbeing and inequality across the world with an emphasis on the environmental, economic and technological factors that influence wellbeing in Australia and beyond.

The Year 10 Mathematics Program is designed to provide access to worthwhile and challenging mathematical learning in a way that takes into account the needs and aspirations of a wide range of student abilities.

It is also designed to promote students’ awareness of mathematics in everyday life, as well as providing students with the confidence to make effective use of mathematical ideas, techniques, and processes. 

Students apply knowledge and skills, model, investigate, solve problems, and use technology to support the application of mathematics in different contexts. They will build skills to provide a solid foundation in preparation for studying a Mathematics subject at VCE level. 

In Year 10 Science students learn that the transmission of inheritable characteristics from one generation to the next involves DNA and genes. They explore how the theory of evolution by natural selection explains the diversity of living things and is supported by a range of scientific evidence.

Students will gain a better understanding of atomic structure and investigate the properties of elements that are used to organise them in the Periodic Table. They study different types of chemical reactions, reaction rates and use symbols and words to represent the balanced chemical equations. Students will explore the universe and its features including galaxies, stars and solar systems and use the Big Bang theory to explain the origin of the universe. They use the laws of physics to describe and predict different motions.

Throughout all these topics students develop an understanding that advances in science understanding often rely on developments in technology and technological advances are often linked to scientific discoveries. They learnt that the values and needs of contemporary society can influence the focus of scientific research.
