Year 10 Accelerated Learning Program

To meet high-ability students at their points of need and readiness with their learning, we will be running Year 10 Advanced English and Mathematics classes in 2027. Students will be selected for these classes based on close analysis of their learning achievements and learning behaviours.

Stepping Up into a VCE subject in Year 10 is a significant commitment as well as being an excellent opportunity for students to extend themselves in an area of strength or interest. 

Students in Year 9 who meet the criteria will be invited to consider choosing a Step Up subject as a part of their Year 10 program. The Step Up subject would be in lieu of two Year 10 Pathway (elective) subjects in their program - one per semester. 

The criteria below have been designed to identify students who are showing readiness to meet the demands of a VCE subject a year early. 

Once enrolled, students in Step Up subjects are expected to maintain consistently good effort and achievement in all their Year 10 Core and Elective subjects as well as in the Year 11 Step Up subject.

There is a six-week checkpoint in Term 1 for all students in VCE subjects. If a student is not meeting expectations at the checkpoint, or at any other time through the year, they may be withdrawn from the Step Up subject at the school’s discretion.

Students who are invited to consider a Step Up subject are not obliged to choose one - there are plenty of excellent Year 10 Pathway subjects to choose from to include as a part of an engaging and challenging Year 10 program.

ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS

• Students must have attendance at least 90% year-to-date

• Students with 80-90% attendance will be considered on a case-by-case basis depending on reasons for absence

ACADEMIC READINESS

• Students should have achieved above the expected level in their Semester 1 Year 9 report for the subject most closely related to the requested Step Up subject (e.g. Yr 9 Humanities if requesting Modern History)

LITERACY SKILLS

Overall literacy skills are considered, particularly for Step Up subjects that require a lot of reading and writing. We will look at students’ English reports and Year 9 PAT-R and NAPLAN results.

NUMERACY SKILLS

Overall numeracy skills are considered, particularly for Step Up subjects that require a lot of mathematical skill. We will look at students’ Maths reports and Year 9 PAT-M and NAPLAN results.

LEARNING BEHAVIOURS / EFFORT

• Students’ results for Learning Behaviours in their Semester 1 Year 9 report should be ‘Usually’ or ‘Consistently’ in all subjects

• Students with one or two factors below ‘usually’ will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Students who meet the criteria and their parents will be contacted by the Assistant Principal who will invite them to consider a Step Up subject as a part of their Year 10 program. 

Identified students will be given a form to take home to discuss with their parents/carers. The form will indicate subjects the student might consider based on their areas of strength identified in their Year 9 reports. 

This form needs to be signed and returned to the school as a part of the course selection process. 

Students will still need to select Year 10 electives to enter into EdVal (the subject selection platform) - any successful Step Up applicants will be added to those subjects manually.

Note that places will only be open to eligible Year 10 students if there is room in the class after all Year 11 students have been allocated their subjects.
