Concept focus: STRUCTURE
Learning Intentions:
To develop a simple motif into a complete composition
To understand different musical forms
To compose using traditional notation and music notation software
Follow the instructions carefully to create your own "glue" composition.
Select any four note names and write them in your Music Book.
e.g. D B G F#
Play these four notes on glockenspiel experimenting with their order. Decide in which order you think they sound best and write the order down in your book.
e.g. B D F# G
Write down a simple two bar rhythm in your book.
e.g.
4. Assign notes from your four notes to the rhythm. Experiment with your glockenspiel to see what sounds good.
e.g.
B D F# D F# G
5. Write the rhythm with the pitches into your assignment in flat.io. This is your MOTIF.
N.B. You can compose for any pitched instrument.
e.g.
6. Copy and paste you motif into the next two bars. Assign a different dynamic to the two different statements of the motif.
This is the first four bars of your composition i.e the "glue"
e.g.
7. Develop your motif into a four bar melody. Make small changes to your motif to do this e.g. alter the rhythm, the contour, the pitch etc. You should still be able to see the relationship between your original motif and the melody. This is the first half of your "A section"
e.g.
8. Develop this melody further into an eight bar melody . In the example below, the first bar has been repeated using a sequence i.e. it uses the same pattern of notes stepping up a note each time. This makes up your complete "A Section".
e.g.
Your composition should now have the "glue" and the composed melody "A section".
e.g.
9. Add the "glue" again at the end of this.
10. Now it's time to add a contrasting section. Use the same or similar notes in this section but make sure there are significant contrasts e.g. note lengths, dynamics, register etc. This section should be 4-8 bars.
e.g.
11. Add this to your other sections followed again by your "glue".
e.g.
12. Add a shorter version of your "A section" and then a final statement of the "glue" to finish.
e.g.
13. You can add some more dynamics and some articulations to make your composition more interesting.
