What Does Information System (IS) Mean?

Information system (IS) refers to a collection of multiple pieces of equipment involved in the collection, processing, storage, and dissemination of information.

Hardware, software, computer system connections and information, information system users, and the system’s housing are all part of an IS. Personal computers, smartphones, databases, and networks are just some examples of information systems.

An Information System works by IPO, an example of this is the Fitbit.

Input - The user is being physically active. The input is the number of steps, heart rate, etc.

Processing - The Fitbit then calculates and organises the data.

Output - Data is the output to the users device.

Example Of An IS:

Banking System - A banking information system connects the bank to its customers, stakeholders, competitors, government etc.

Bank records customer information such as:

  • Government Regulations

  • Financial Institutes' Information

The bank uses stored customer information to send bank statements to customers, reminds loan repayments, sends promotional advertisements and reports financial frauds to relevant government authorities.
