The enclosure is a wooden box, with a door that can slide back.
There are two large holes, one at the back and another at the front, they are blocked with fly-screen material to ensure that the insects cannot escape but can still have air ventilation.
What Did We Use To Make the Enclosure?
Our enclosure already started with the wooden box, however we had to staple down and hot glue the mesh/fly-screen on the front and back of the box, in order to cover the holes that were cut out. We also attached soft stumps to the bottom of the box so that it wouldn't scratch the science benches.
When designing and making our enclosure itself, we had to consider the natural habitat of the stick insects. The height of the branches we put in had to be set up to mimic the trees and surroundings for our stick insects. The enclosure requires height the most out of the most dimensions. This is because the Purple Winged Stick Insect generally live in the the higher areas of trees, hence naturally liking taller grounds.
We also have hinges on the door, not only allowing us to open and close the door (naturally) but also as we slide back the door, we are given more room to manage our stick insects.
This is a small diagram to show you what our enclosure looks like in a 3D format!
The dimensions of the box are 40 x 36 x 88 cm. The total volume accounts for 126720 cm³.
This is Slim Tim and Slick Tim, who feel a bit lonely without any fresh leaves :(
But they really like the highest parts of the box!
When we leave our insects in the prep room, we make sure that at least one of the empty spaces on the enclosure is facing the window so that sunlight is able to come through. This also comes into play regarding the fact that we are attempting to mimic their forest habitat.
Recieve enclosure
Measure out mesh according to the perimeter of the hole
Hold down mesh and staple with staple gun
Hot glue and use a paddle pop stick to fill in the gaps!
Cut and remove excess material
Add stablising pads to the bottom of the enclosure - one to each corner
Add in materials required for the insect
