The selection of subjects for Years 9 and 10 is a very important decision for students and parents.
Students should select subjects they enjoy, have an interest in and believe they will do well in for Years 9 and 10.
It is important for students to select their most enjoyable subjects, as this will give them a positive attitude to all aspects of their studies. This positive attitude will then be carried on into Years 11 and 12.
Students should not select subjects based on
what their friends are doing,
the teacher they think might be teaching a certain subject or,
to a lesser extent, as a prerequisite to their Year 11 and 12 studies.
It is also important for students to give their initial thoughts a lot of consideration; change of subjects is possible, but it does place the student at a distinct disadvantage, as they will be behind the other students completing the course. Changes can only take place in the first six weeks of year 9. Electives cannot be changed after this time. Students cannot begin new electives in Year 10. It is also possible that the other classes are full. It is much better to choose carefully and correctly the first time.
Students will be asked to complete their elective choices on line. Students will be emailed a weblink and unique login to make their choices. Students need to choose their electives by selecting their six preferences in order.
It is suggested that you record your choices here as a reminder for you. A Parent/Caregiver signature is required to indicate that students have discussed their choices.
High demand electives will fill quickly, so it is important that elective choices be completed on line promptly.
Parents should also take into account the fees attached to some electives. If students select electives with fees, parents will be expected to pay these fees. Student assistance is available for families who are experiencing financial difficulties.
We hope the process of choosing electives for Year 9 and 10 is an exciting one and gives students something to strive for as they move into Stage 5.

All students entering Year 9 at Wagga Wagga High School are required to study:
English
Mathematics
Science
both History and Geography (for alternating semesters in both Years 9 and 10), and
Personal Development, Health and Physical Education.
Students are required to study three elective subjects. More information about the elective subjects can be found under each of the faculty tabs.
We cannot guarantee that all elective subjects listed will run as this is dependent on sufficient students wanting to study a particular subject. We are therefore asking students to list their first six (6) preferences using the weblink to Edval. We will use the students’ six top choices to establish the subject lines and their selections.
Parents are urged to discuss the subject offerings with their child. Students should choose courses which they are interested and will provide them with a sound preparation for the future.
It is also important to know, that students do not need to limit their elective choices in Years 9 and 10 only to the areas they think they might wish to pursue in senior years. Almost all subjects studied in Years 11 and 12 do not have to have been previously studied in Years 9 and 10.
Students may select any combination of electives to study in Years 9 and 10. The exception to this is that if three Industrial Subjects are studied (Wood, Metal, Engineering and Electronics), only two can be counted towards the students RoSA (Record of School Achievement).
Please note that:
The NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) and the Department of Education set these course expectations.
Satisfactory participation in a minimum of two electives is required for Year 9 and 10. Students should ensure that they choose carefully and wisely as there will be little or no opportunity to make changes to selections.
