Star
The star topology revolves around a central node which all other nodes of the system is connected to. The central node can be a computer like a mainframe with links going out to other terminals. It can be a hub with links going out to computers that are workstations and servers. The central computer serves as a switch, directing data to its intended destination.
A message with data and address is created then sent to the central node. The central node reads the address and sends it to the intended destination.
Advantages
- If one node fails or a cable breaks, the rest of the system can still function
- If the central node is powerful enough, it can handle large amounts of nodes
- Easy to add or remove nodes
- It is easy to identify a faulty cable
Disadvantages
- If the central node fails the whole system cannot function.
- Limited to the power of the central node
- large amounts of cabling
