In the Supernatural television series many different types of mythical creatures are presented as well as urban legends. However, I will only be focusing on one mythical creature discussed throughout the show, ghosts. Ghosts are one of the most recurring entities in Supernatural and are the spirit of a human, or in some cases an animal, who were unable to pass on after death. Ghosts tend to begin as disoriented souls wandering and are often not aware they are dead. However, the longer a ghost remains on earth the more confused and angry they become and eventually many of them turn into violent and vengeful spirits. Overall, a ghosts' behaviour depends on who they were as a person but some can be turned to murder and other forms of violence, as a result of their inability to move on for several years. In Supernatural ghosts can be repelled and kept at bay using salt & iron. Ghosts have many abilities such as electromagnetic interference, thermokinesis, telekinesis, teleportation, intangibility etc. A ghost can only be 'killed' by salting and burning their bones, other remains, or a personal object the spirit may have attached themselves to. This forces the spirit to move on, either to hell or heaven. This show also makes reference to two specific urban legends I have researched, The Flying Dutchman and La Llorna, 'weeping woman'. The Flying Dutchman is brought up in a stand alone episode when a different ghost ship is at the center of the plot. La Llorna is the main villain in the series premiere of Supernatural. However, the story in this episode slightly varies to the authentic urban legend surrounding La Llorna. This spirit seems to be merged with the urban legend of a 'woman in white' as the woman is haunting a highway instead of a waterway. Supernatural takes the stance that there are multiple 'weeping woman' spirits but the origin story of these spirits remains the same. The origin story states that a young woman catches her husband cheating and out of extreme jealousy and rage murders her children. Horrified at what she has done she kills herself and her spirit is born of violent death. This ghost continues to haunt a specific highway near where she lived, murdering every unfaithful man she encounters.
H20 is an Australian children's show focusing on 3 young girls brought together by their joint secret, the fact that they are mermaids. In this series the main characters were unintentionally turned into mermaids due to magic from a full moon in an underwater cave. They maintain human form for the majority of their life, however their scaled tail and bra materialise approximately ten seconds after their skin touches water. As turned mermaids they have many aquatic adaptations in said form. For example, the ability to hold their breath for up to 15 minutes due to being amphibious. They also have enhanced speed whilst swimming underwater, a majorly extended lifespan, although it is unknown whether this applies to turned mermaids as it does born mermaids, and in some cases zoolingualism. Each of the main three characters have their own power, the ability to heat water, to freeze water, and the ability to manipulate waters movement. It is later revealed in a spin off series that there are also born mermaids in the same universe. These mermaids live in pods their whole life rarely ever taking on a human form, these mermaids have access to all three of these powers and more by utilising the magic of the moon.
As the name suggests this show follows a siren, a mermaid who is able to sing a siren song to a human in order to hypnotise them and manipulate their feelings and intentions. Merfolk have the upper body of a human and the lower half of a fish and their whole body is covered with gray skin and silvery gray scales. They are able to catch and tear their prey using their dagger like teeth and talons. Gill slits are visible on their ribcage enabling them to breath under water and their fingers are webbed which helps to assist them when swimming. Female merfolk, or mermaids, have a barbed stinger at the end of their tale that can be utilised for self defense or as a weapon. Merfolk also have pelvic fins, a large dorsal fin on their back and a smaller one running down the back of their tail. This is an extremely realistic addition to their appearance as many other depictions of mermaids do not have these fins. A dorsal fin helps with sudden turns and stops in the water, it also protects the fish from rolling. Pelvic fins help balance a fish whilst swimming. If mermaids were to exist they would most likely be seen with these fins. Merfolk have extreme speed whilst swimming, enhanced senses, extreme physical strength, water maneuverability, enhanced regeneration etc. Merfolk also have enhanced lifespans and the ability to disguise themselves amongst humans with their skin changing colour and legs replacing their tails.
The movie Exists follows a group of friends who decide to go on a camping trip in east Texas. During the drive to the cabin the group hits something with their car and while they are out investigating animal cries can be heard in the distance. It is later discovered that bigfoot is continuously terrorising the group as the unidentified object they hit was it's child. The film is shot in a 'found footage' style so it is difficult to get a clear shot of the creature however, the bigfoot can be estimated to be approximately six foot tall with an ape-like build and humanoid face. The bigfoot is shown to be extremely agile throughout the film, with the ability to jump high, and long distances without losing it's balance. The bigfoot is also shown to have extreme strength whilst attacking several members of the group, and at one point pushing an RV over the edge of a cliff. It is shown to have an extreme intelligence with the ability to continually track down the group and seek revenge. It's intelligence is further demonstrated in the end of the movie when the bigfoot seems to understand a pleading beg for mercy and apology from one of the group members. This character lowers his weapon and profusely apologies to the creature for having killed it's child before turning around preparing for the bigfoot's attack however, the creature instead turns around and returns to the forest.
